Long Duration Energy Storage - A Key Piece in US and Europe's Decarbonization Plans

OVERVIEW

The interconnected grids in Europe and US are rapidly decarbonizing as more and more renewable energy sources are coming online. So far, the intermittency that wind and solar are bringing has been well handled with short duration storage solutions that have provided e.g. frequency support, ramp support to manage the so called duck curve.

These systems are now starting to experience a new phase in the decarbonization journey where renewable energy will be providing 30-90% of the energy. This calls for other forms of flexibility in the grid. Sumitomo SHI FW is pioneering the Liquid Air Energy Storage, a long duration energy storage technology, which is complementing the common BESS technology to achieve higher shares of renewable energy while still maintaining a resilient and stable grid.

In light of the retirement or closure of thermal generation, the past few years have witnessed a rapid surge in distributed and utility-scale energy storage projects. These initiatives aim to address the growing gap between supply and demand. The increased utilization of clean energy sources and advancements in load-side management have reshaped utility load patterns. Consequently, energy storage resources now play a pivotal role in balancing loads while achieving decarbonization goals without compromising reliability. Looking ahead, the future electricity grids in Europe and the USA will necessitate the strategic integration of well-positioned energy storage assets, marking them as indispensable components in the resource portfolio mix.

In this webinar we will go deeper into why long duration energy storage is required to decarbonize US and Europe’s grids and the value it brings to market players. Furthermore, among the panelists we will take a look at the policies and market mechanisms in both EU and US and what is required to incentivize wide deployment of LDES technologies.

Presenters

Jan Andersson | Director, Market Development | Sumitomo SHI FW

Jan has worked extensively in the European and Indian markets to facilitate the change to more sustainable, decarbonised power systems. With his broad knowledge in energy technologies, e.g. energy storage, power systems and modelling, as well as his understanding of energy trading and finance, Jan brings clarity on how things are connected. He believes that the energy transition is a source for new business opportunities for the energy sector, and that by challenging conventional thinking and exchanging data and experience, the industry has real development potential. It is not surprising, therefore, that increasing collaboration between individuals, companies, and countries, is what keeps Jan on the move.

Alex Campbell | Director of Policy and Partnerships | Long Duration Energy Storage Council

Alex is the Director of Policy and Partnerships for the LDES Council, where he focuses on the intersection of long duration energy storage policy initiatives and working with LDES Council partners to implement storage targets, shared goals, and advocate for policies impacting the acceleration of the diverse family of LDES technologies. Through this work, Alex covers Europe and a broader global footprint.

Patrick Clerens | Secretary General | EASE - The European Association for Storage of Energy

Patrick studied law at the University of Saarbrücken and the University of Mainz. Since 1996, he has worked as a consultant for a private company specialising in European Affairs in Brussels. In his capacity as Brussels Representative of different European associations, he has been involved in the climate and energy field since 2003. He is an expert for several Technical Expert Groups by the European Commission, supporting the European decision-making process. He has managed the EASE office in Brussels as Secretary General since its establishment in 2011.
