Biomass boilers, commonly used in industrial applications such as power boilers in pulp & paper mills have traditionally faced major challenges in utility scale power production particularly if agricultural (agro) wastes are part of the biomass mix. High alkali metals (sodium and potassium) contained within agro wastes can lead to ash agglomeration, fouling, and corrosion issues. Advances in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) steam generator technology can effectively mitigate these issues allowing biomass power plants to achieve high plant efficiency and reliability.
Amec Foster Wheeler’s advanced bio CFB technology is taking 100% biomass firing to utility scale levels. In 2012, the world’s largest 100% biomass fired CFB boiler burning wood residues with up to 20% agro-biomass was commissioned at the GDF Suez Energia 205 MW Polaniec Power Station in Poland. Despite a wide range of agro wastes in the fuel, the advanced bio-CFB technology has enabled the plant operate at very high efficiencies (36% LHV) and low emissions compared to typical biomass grate boilers.
In this informative webinar, Marko Natunen, Senior Project Manager will review the design features and performance characteristics of Amec Foster Wheeler’s advanced bio CFB technology utilized at the Polaniec Power Station. The following topics will be addressed:
How to achieve high plant efficiency with biomass fuels
How to mitigate boiler agglomeration, fouling and corrosion with biomass fuels
Quantifying fuel risks for agglomeration, fouling, and corrosion for specific agro biofuels (sunflower husks, wheat straw, olive waste, palm kernel shells, etc.)
Reduction in boiler fouling, corrosion, and maintenance by preventing ash melting
Attendees can ask questions which will be covered during the Q&A session of the webinar.
This webinar can help you make informed decisions about CFB boiler selection options for new biomass firing applications. Register today to secure your spot in this free webinar!

Marko Natunen | Senior Project Manager | Amec Foster Wheeler
Marko leads Amec Foster Wheeler's international Boiler/Power Plant deliveries. Main tasks are to ensure that Project is executed within given schedule and budget without accidents. Safety is a key factor in our deliveries. His latest finished Project "Polaniec Green Energy" is located in Kracow, Poland for a period of approximately two years to ensure the best possible communication within the joint Project team between Poland and Finland.
